• Women’s club soccer earns second trip to nationals in three years

    Baylor women's club soccer

Members of the Baylor women’s club soccer team are giving thanks early this year, as they celebrate another successful season capping off this weekend with the National Campus Championship Series National Soccer Championships — the club soccer equivalent of the NCAA tournament.

Baylor went 6-2 on the season, including a 5-0 mark in conference, then won its regional tournament in Lubbock late last month to earn one of 24 spots in this year’s national championships. The tournament, held this weekend in Phoenix, began with pool play Thursday and moved into a bracket format beginning today. Baylor tied Colorado but lost to Florida in pool play; the Bears now face Virginia Tech tonight.

As one of Baylor’s 22 club sports, the squad practices for two hours a day three times a week at the intramural fields across La Salle from the Ferrell Center. Home games are also played on those fields, as the Bears face teams from across the state: Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, etc. This year’s trip to nationals marked the team’s second championship appearance in three years; in 2008, the program finished among the top eight in the nation.

    Sic ’em, Baylor club soccer!
