• Veterans of Baylor honored as Student Veterans of America Chapter of the Year

Baylor student veterans receive an award

Baylor has long taken pride in how it supports student veterans on campus, and it shows. BU annually ranks among the nation’s best colleges for veterans; this year, Baylor is ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 3 in Texas.

Further evidence: Veterans of Baylor (VoB), a student organization that supports student veterans on campus and in their community, has been named the 2024 Student Veterans of America Chapter of the Year from among nearly 1,600 SVA chapters nationwide.

Veterans of Baylor is led by and comprised of 360+ Baylor students who have previously served in the U.S. military. First chartered in 2011, the group provides peer mentorship to incoming student veterans, mentors ROTC cadets, and helps student veterans continue to pursue service-driven lives even after their military service is complete. They also serve the Baylor and Waco communities by lending textbooks at no cost to military-connected students, speaking at elementary schools, serving breakfasts at the local Veterans One Stop, and more.

“I am both shocked and honored that we received this award,” says VoB president Caroline Burten, a senior health science studies major and U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “I know we have worked hard as a team this year to provide every support possible to our Baylor veterans, but to be named the BEST out of over 1,600 chapters is really so humbling… I hope this award helps to bring awareness to the veteran population on campus at Baylor, but also on campuses across the country.”

“This is an incredible honor and a true testament to our student veteran leaders and their unwavering dedication to their peers and the Baylor community as a whole,” adds VoB advisor and Marine Corps veteran Kevin Davis (BA ’12), program manager of Veteran Educational and Transition Services (VETS) in the Center for Academic Support and Engagement at Baylor. “These student leaders are a powerful testament to Baylor’s mission of ‘worldwide leadership and service’ — before, during and after their time at Baylor.”
