Big 12 pitcher of the year helps softball host regional
Baylor softball had a good week, following up a host of all-conference honors with the news last night that the program will be hosting an NCAA Regional at Getterman Stadium this weekend!
Head coach Glenn Moore’s Lady Bears enter NCAA play for the fifth time in six years after finishing third in the Big 12 and advancing to the semifinals of last week’s conference tournament. Baylor will face 25th-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette Friday at 7:30 p.m.; the regional’s other two teams, No. 12 Northwestern and Texas State, play Friday at 5 p.m.
Earlier in the week, Baylor’s Whitney Canion was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, one of five players to earn all-conference honors. In her first year at Baylor, Canion has already compiled one of the best seasons in program history, setting new school records for strikeouts in a season and most 10-plus strikeouts in a career. Quite the flamethrower, she led the Big 12 in strikeouts and at last count was third in the nation in K’s. Also among the all-Big 12 Bears was senior Brette Reagan, who fought back from a torn ACL midseason to earn her fourth straight all-conference honor. (ESPN.com ran a nice feature on her this week.)
Sic ’em, Baylor softball!
