• Lady Bears sweep Big 12 titles for 6th straight season

Baylor Lady Bears: 2016 Big 12 tournament champs!

Winning a conference title is hard. Sweeping both the regular season and conference tournament titles in the same year? Even more impressive. But doing it six straight years — well, that’s almost unfathomable.

In the Big 12 Conference’s 20-year history, only three teams have ever put together such a sustained run of dominance over the league: Texas women’s tennis (1997-2002), Baylor women’s tennis (2006-11), and now Baylor women’s basketball (2011-present), following the No. 4-ranked Lady Bears’ win over No. 6 Texas Monday night. (Note that two of those three have worn the green and gold.)

A few numbers as you contemplate the dynasty Kim Mulkey has built here:

    • 6 straight Big 12 regular season titles
    • 6 straight Big 12 tournament titles (and 7 of the last 8)
    • 5 of the last 6 Big 12 Players of the Year
    • 4 of the last 6 Big 12 Coach of the Year awards
    • 6 straight years with multiple All-Big 12 first-team selections
    • 6 straight 30-win seasons

Next up for the Lady Bears? Most likely, a No. 1 seed in this year’s NCAA tournament (which would be the program’s 4th in 6 years) and another chance to host the first two rounds right here in Waco (which would be the 5th time in 6 years). We’ll find out when this year’s bracket is announced on Monday, March 14, at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN.

    Sic ’em, Lady Bears!
