Baylor alum appointed to National Commission on Hunger
As Baylor University’s Texas Hunger Initiative makes encouraging headway towards the mission of eliminating hunger in Texas, the project’s director will now also help shape the fight nationwide.
THI Director Jeremy Everett, MDiv ’01, was appointed to the National Commission on Hunger by Speaker of the House John Boehner last week. Everett (pictured above) is one of just 10 members on the Commission, the first group of its kind created by Congress to fight hunger and food insecurity nationwide. The group has been specifically tasked with suggesting policies to make existing programs and funds more effective and new ideas for public-private partnerships.
Everett is no stranger to such a task. Since helping launch the Texas Hunger Initiative in conjunction with Baylor’s School of Social Work in 2009, Everett has actively worked to connect government agencies, faith organizations, non-profits and local businesses to decrease food insecurity, providing a perfect foundation to build on nationally.
This is not the first time Baylor and the THI have been noticed in Washington. Their work was championed by First Lady Michelle Obama three years ago on the “Let’s Move” website, and later by an official WhiteHouse.gov blog from the Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
Sic ’em, Jeremy and the Texas Hunger Initiative!
