• Alumni-led magazine captures essence of Baylor Homecoming

    Bleep Magazine on Baylor Homecoming

“More than activities and events, Homecoming is about reliving the emotions of college and reconnecting to a larger community. I could go back to Waco, Texas, whenever I want, but it won’t have the same feeling as it does during Homecoming.”

Ryan Brinson, BA ’08, MA ’10, hits the nail on the head in describing Baylor Homecoming to an audience outside the Baylor family. Brinson’s words run on page 150 of the latest issue of BLEEP Magazine, for which he serves as editor-in-chief. In his article, “Homecoming: Why it’s so important to me,” Brinson explains that, in a world where we’re all connected 24/7 to old friends via things like Facebook, Homecoming is now more about “reconnecting with our school and our traditions.”

You might not expect to find such words in a magazine called BLEEP, but that’s exactly the point. “The name comes from the fact that to ‘bleep’ something out is to censor it, and that is the opposite of what we’re doing,” says Brinson. “We want to tell people’s stories that might not have a forum to tell them, in whatever creative industry they’re in.”

Though based in New York City, BLEEP has a deep Baylor connection; Brinson is joined on staff by design editor Lisa Sorenson, BS ’10, and regular contributors include Nick Dean (a Baylor senior), Stephanie Meliotes, BFA ’11, Danielle Milam, BSED ’08, Laura Seitter, BA ’10, and Amy Stone (another BU senior). The current issue also includes writing and photography by Caleb Bollenbacher, BA ’11, Charly Edsitty, BA ’09, Tyler Ellis, BA ’09, MA ’11, Ben Humeniuk, BA ’08, MSED ’11, Holly Renner (a Baylor junior) and Matt Tolbert, BFA ’11.

Sic ’em, BLEEP (and welcome back for Homecoming)!
