• Two of BU hoops’ best reach significant scoring plateaus in the same week

LaceDarius Dunn and Brittney GrinerBear fans saw two of the best basketball players in school history reach significant milestones this week in Baylor victories.

In Tuesday night’s win over Oklahoma, senior LaceDarius Dunn became just the second player in program history to score 2,000 career points; entering Saturday’s game at Iowa State, Dunn needs just 181 points to pass 11-year NBA veteran Terry Teagle and become the program’s all-time leading scorer. At his current pace (a Big 12-leading 22.5 points per game, among the top 10 nationally), Dunn would set the mark well before the end of conference play. He also moved into fourth place in Big 12 history in career scoring Tuesday night and is within reach of the conference record (held by Texas Tech’s Andre Emmett with 2,256 career points).

One night later, sophomore Britney Griner reached the 1,000-point plateau for her career by dropping in 27 to lead the No. 1-ranked Lady Bears past Texas in Austin. Griner is the 28th Lady Bear to reach that mark, doing so in just 51 games. For reference, former BU All-American and current WNBA star Sophia Young needed 67 games to reach 1,000 career points; Young finished her Baylor career second on the Lady Bears’ career scoring chart with 2,480 points. (Suzie Snider Eppers holds the BU record with a staggering 3,861 points, set from 1973-77.)

The Lady Bears hold the top spot in the national rankings for the second week in a row as they prepare to host Oklahoma State Saturday at 7 p.m. After winning their first two Big 12 games of the season, the men sit atop the league as they travel to Iowa State Saturday for a 5 p.m. match-up with Iowa State, then return home for a quick turnaround as they host No. 3 Kansas on ESPN’s Big Monday two days later. (Fewer than 200 general public tickets remain for that game; get yours here while they last.)

    Sic ’em, Baylor basketball!
