We mentioned Pittsburgh Steeler (and Baylor alum) Daniel Sepulveda’s “I am Second” video back in January as his team was on its way to the Super Bowl. Now, fresh off a World Series appearance, another BU alum, Texas Ranger David Murphy, has joined Sepulveda in sharing his story for the “I am Second” campaign. The […]
The question above is exactly what Baylor Magazine is asking the Baylor family. What makes Baylor distinct from other universities? Why is it important for BU to be a part of the academic landscape today? What would the world miss if Baylor suddenly ceased to exist? Why is it worth our time, our support, our […]
While we celebrate the 235th anniversary of America’s independence this weekend, much of Texas is celebrating our great state’s 175 years of independence from Mexico all year. (Texas Monthly is advertising it as the state’s “terquasquicentennial;” say that five times fast.) Baylor and Baylor people have long played important roles in Texas history, even before […]
Based on the turnout for this month’s Diadeloso Texas, held at SeaWorld in San Antonio, I’d say Baylor alumni miss the old school holiday. (Click here for a photo gallery from the day.) More than 750 Bears of all ages turned out for the fourth-annual event. Alumni, current students, parents, faculty and staff enjoyed a […]
[We received this story recently, and it was just too inspiring not to share. Below is the condensed version; click here for a longer telling written by the subject’s granddaughter, Cheryl Shafer Bland, BSED ’85.] On Aug. 13, 1911 — almost 100 years ago — Frances Elizabeth Schmoyer was born to a poor family right […]
In May 2003, Hannah Gilliland graduated from Baylor with a degree in education and plans to become a teacher. Six months later, however, brain cancer took her life. It would have been easy for her friends and family to simply mourn her loss — but they did more. To honor Hannah’s dream of affecting the […]
Few things say Baylor like the bells ringing in Pat Neff Hall. Silencing the bells would be like removing the red brick from campus; it just wouldn’t be the same. The original 25-chime set was given by Trustee Cullen Thomas, and debuted in Dec. 1939 with “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow.” When those […]
Unless you consider YMCA sports as a kid, I’ve never been an athlete. So, more than most people, Dr. Bob Heins, BA ’61, puts me to shame. A 72-year-old dentist in Plattsburgh, New York, Heins remains a serious competitive triathlete. In fact, he even began competing in Ironman events five years ago — at age […]
From meeting with students during Dr Pepper Hour, to traveling around the country to engage alumni in planning Baylor’s course over the next decade, to working to reach the $100 million goal of the President’s Scholarship Initiative, Baylor President Ken Starr puts in more hours than just about anyone I know. Yet on top of […]
As simple tributes to those who have gone before us, they are easy to miss or take for granted. But the 140-plus red granite lampposts scattered across Baylor’s campus are more than just utilitarian lighting — they are memorials to those who have served our country, including many who gave their lives in action. The […]
