While many who live along the Gulf Coast are still without power and working to get their lives back in order after Hurricane Ike, Baylor University is doing what it can to help its students and their families. After the storm made its way through Texas, University officials began to contact the 800 or so students whose families live along the Texas and Louisiana coast to let them know specifically how Baylor can help them during this time. Staff…
After 73 days and 4,500 miles, the Alive Campaign riders crossed the finish line Sunday, biking into Anchorage, Alaska — right on schedule! (For background on the Alive Campaign for suicide prevention and awareness, click here.) The remaining four riders — Justin Brown of El Paso, Texas; Alyson Erikson of San Antonio; Nathan Lloyd of Itasca, Texas; and Andi Nakasone of Okinawa, Japan (Kyle Ferguson of Schertz, Texas, was unable to complete the ri…
I read this week that over the years, ExxonMobil has given more than $5 million to Baylor through the company’s matching gifts program. Last year, Baylor received more than half a million dollars from matching gift programs, including more than $370,000 from ExxonMobil’s generous three-to-one matching policy. ExxonMobil is just one of more 7,500 companies that offer matching gift programs to employees. Whether you’re already giving to Baylor or j…
I’ve never been much of a fisherman — too impatient, I suppose — but I’ve got enough outdoorsman in my blood to understand those who do. Two Baylor alums have made the news this year for their fishing exploits: Alton Jones won the Bassmaster Classic in February, while Charlie Pack was inducted into the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame earlier this month. Jones (pictured at right) claimed the title at the world’s biggest bass-fishing tourname…
…and the 1988 national championship. He was the fastest coach ever to reach 500 wins, and his .869 winning percentage is still the best in the sport’s history. His entire career — as a player, assistant coach and head coach — has been at Louisiana Tech until now. It speaks to Baylor’s place on the national women’s basketball scene that a Hall of Fame coach like Barmore would leave retirement to come to Waco. In fact, he said Baylor was one of only…
Over 2,000 of the state’s brightest high school students flooded Baylor’s campus this month for the University Interscholastic League (UIL) regional finals. The academic and theatrical competitions were held April 11-12, followed by the athletic contests this past week. This weekend was also Spring Premiere; prospective students and their families (totaling over 3,500 guests) visited campus to learn about Baylor as they prepare to decide which co…
Baylor senior Juan Yaquian’s life story could easily have turned out differently. At age 9, Juan’s father left the family, forcing his mother to work multiple jobs. But instead of following the easy path to trouble, Juan dedicated himself to his studies. His hard work paid off, as Yaquian will graduate next May with a degree in electrical and computer engineering. Last week, he got some more good news — he received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholars…
In her first spring as head soccer coach at Baylor, Marci Jobson took the team’s usual spring scrimmages and added a little something extra: the chance to raise money for charity. Jobson created the Play for Hope Tournament, held last weekend at Betty Lou Mays Field. Baylor defeated Trinity, TCU and Texas State by identical 1-0 scores, which is good news for the team’s immediate future on the field. But the even better news was the $2,500 in dona…
