Baylor acrobatics & tumbling team holds aloft the national champions trophy

On Saturday, Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling won its 11th — yes, ELEVENTH!!!!!!!!!!! — straight national title! The win extends a run that dates back to 2015 (there was no championship in 2020 due to COVID). Over those 12 seasons, head coach Felecia Mulkey’s squad has gone a mind-boggling 122-2, including a current 62-meet winning streak.

For context: The longest championship streak in NCAA D-1 history is 12, set by Arkansas men’s indoor track and field from 1984-95. (To be clear, Baylor’s current run is an NCATA streak, not an NCAA streak — though the Bears will get to make a run at that record starting next year as A&T becomes an official NCAA sport.)

Not surprisingly, Baylor also swept national individual honors, led by back-to-back NCATA Athlete of the Year Payton Washington. Bears also won NCATA Specialist of the Year (Leavy McDonald), Freshman of the Year (Mo Arthur), and Coach of the Year (Mulkey). Washington, McDonald, Arthur and Emily Bott all were named All-Americans, while Gigi Rendino added All-Academic honors, for good measure.

The win is Baylor Athletics’ 17th national championship overall. In addition to A&T’s 11 wins, Baylor has also won team national titles in men’s basketball (2021), women’s basketball (2005, 2012 & 2019), men’s tennis (2004) and equestrian (2012).

As noted above, Baylor’s championship is the last one of the NCATA era. Next year, the NCAA will host its first acrobatics & tumbling national championship. Here’s to hoping the Bears can add yet another trophy to their trophy case in 2027!

Sic ’em, Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling!
