Summer research opportunities fuel Baylor students’ drive and passions

For many Baylor students, summer is a chance for special experiences — whether through internships, study abroad or mission trips, or research opportunities.
Baylor senior Greatness Adewumi is an example of that last group — a psychology/neuroscience major on the pre-med track whose experience this past summer in Houston has only fueled her desire to delve into medical research.
Adewumi spent her summer as part of the inaugural Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Undergraduate Research Program, one of the nation’s most competitive biomedical research fellowships. Throughout the eight-week program, Adewumi got the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research, connect with an elite scientific community, and build essential professional skills for future success in a scientific career.
She was thrilled to be placed at Baylor College of Medicine under the mentorship of Dr. Huda Zoghbi, a world-renowned neuroscientist and geneticist known for her groundbreaking work in neurological disorders. The match couldn’t have been better for Adewumi, as she aspires to work with people with neurodevelopmental conditions to advance interventions that can help and support them.
“The rigorous coursework and mentorship I’ve received as a Baylor neuroscience major prepared me to thrive in this highly competitive program,” she says.
Working alongside M.D., Ph.D. and postdoctoral students, Adewumi’s experience not only strengthened her confidence and affirmed her passion for medicine, but also deepened her sense of purpose. She believes God has been guiding her path, showing that she can embrace both roles as a physician and a researcher.
“This is only the beginning,” she says. “I look forward to learning, growing and making thoughtful contributions to the future of medicine.”
Sic ’em, Greatness!
