• Baylor softball headed back to Florida to begin NCAA tournament

Baylor softball prays as a team

Fourteen months ago, Baylor softball was in Gainesville, Fla., getting ready to play the Gators, when the 2020 season was put on hold due to COVID-19.

The intervening year has been a tough one for the program. Before they could get back on the field, Baylor softball lost beloved longtime assistant coach Mark Lumley to cancer in December. The team got off to a hot start at 22-5 through late March, but then stumbled a bit down the stretch as season-ending injuries claimed three of their top hitters and a leading pitcher.

They’ll get a chance to make up for that this weekend in the spot where it all began, as they return to Florida for the NCAA Gainesville regional. The Lady Bears are the No. 2 seed in the four-team regional, opening play Friday against South Alabama. No. 4 overall seed Florida and South Florida round out the competition in the double-elimination bracket. Games this weekend will be televised on the ESPN family of networks, beginning with Friday’s game on ESPN3. Follow the Lady Bears’ progress this weekend on BaylorBears.com.

    Sic ’em, Baylor softball!
