• Baylor alum turns renewed legislation into a win for BU students

Taxes. We joke that they’re on the short list of things that are truly certain in this life, but I’d like to add something else to the line-up: Baylor alums will find a way to come through for Baylor students.

For example, take Carl Box, BBA ’66. When Congress recently passed legislation extending the beneficial terms of the IRA charitable rollover for 2010 and 2011, he jumped at the chance to turn a helpful tax break into life-changing opportunities for Baylor students. Answering President Starr’s call to rally behind Baylor students through The President’s Scholarship Initiative, Box designated half of his IRA gift to establish an endowed scholarship fund in memory of his wife, Dottie, which will assist Baylor theater majors. And he didn’t stop there. Fueled by a passion for Baylor athletics, Box is using another portion of his IRA gift to benefit Baylor’s student-athletes.

“Everything fell into place,” Box said of the renewed legislation and his desire to empower Baylor students and student-athletes. “I was wanting to do this earlier in the year, and I was very pleased when they passed the bill again. I can’t think of another place for students that’s quite like Baylor.”

Sic ’em, Carl and all Baylor alumni who find outstanding ways to keep on giving back!
