• Baylor to host pair of national championships this spring

    Baylor hosting NCEA championships

Baylor’s acrobatics & tumbling and equestrian teams won’t have far to go in their pursuit of national titles this spring. That’s because Baylor will be championship central next month, with each team hosting its sport’s national championship in Waco.

Last fall, the National Acrobatics and Tumbling Association (NCATA) announced Baylor as the host of the 2016 NCATA National Championships (April 16-19, at the Ferrell Center). After winning the program’s first national championship a year ago while on the road in West Virginia, head coach Felecia Mulkey’s squad will have a great opportunity to defend their title right here at home this spring. Baylor has hosted the championship once before, welcoming the nation’s top six teams to the Ferrell Center back in 2012.

For head coach Ellen White’s equestrian team, hosting the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) National Championship has become a regular occurrence. This year marks the 10th time in the NCEA’s 15-year history that the championship rounds have been held at Waco’s Extraco Events Center. Like Baylor A&T, the equestrian program has one national championship trophy on the shelf, having won the 2012 NCEA Hunter Seat National Championship in front of the home crowd in Waco; the Bears are aiming for their second national title this year when they host April 14-16.

With some of the nation’s top facilities on campus, a reputation as a great host for NCAA regionals, super regionals and other championship rounds, and a supportive Waco community that provides great hospitality to visitors, it’s really no surprise that Baylor continues to be selected to host national championships. (And it’s not just A&T and equestrian; Baylor hosted last year’s NCAA Tennis Championships, as well.)

Want to see Baylor win a couple more national titles? Then make plans to help give Baylor A&T and Baylor equestrian a loud home site advantage next month. They’ve won two of our five team titles, and a supportive home crowd could be a big factor in helping them bring home Baylor’s sixth and seventh crowns.

Sic ’em, Baylor acrobatics & tumbling and equestrian!
