• Two of top 30 companies on Bloomberg list headed by Baylor Bears

Bloomberg BusinessweekEach year, Bloomberg Businessweek compiles a list of the 50 S&P companies that have provided the best returns to shareholders over the last five years. In this year’s ranking (released in the June 21 issue, on newsstands now), two of the nation’s top 30 companies are led by members of the Baylor family.

BMC Software, headed by CEO (and Baylor Regent) Bob Beauchamp, ranks 27th on the list; the Houston-based company sells systems management software to megacompanies like AT&T. Beauchamp joined the Baylor family after being impressed by his two sons’ experiences as students here, accepting a position on the Baylor Board last year. “I’ve come to have a remarkable respect for Baylor,” Beauchamp told Baylor Magazine last summer. “The faculty, the students, the alumni, they’re just a special group of people who are so high quality in terms of their character and their value systems.”

The very next spot on the list is held by Hewlett-Packard, led by CEO Mark Hurd, BBA ’79. HP is actually the largest company on the list, with sales of more than $114 billion. Hurd’s involvement with Baylor has ranged from speaking engagements (such as Baylor Business Network meetings) to generous support of the Baylor tennis programs (including the Hurd Tennis Building on University Parks Drive).
