• More BaylorProud artists & bands who have made names for themselves

    Bear playing piano

Last summer, we compiled this list of 14 BaylorProud artists you should be listening to — singers and bands who have made names for themselves in recent years, and who, just like you, are Baylor Bears.

Since then, you’ve brought to our attention eight more names that to check out. Here’s a quick rundown, starting with our updated Spotify playlist:

Two former Uproar Records artists, Jillian Edwards, BA ’11, and Layne Lynch, BFA ’13, deserve a place on this list. Edwards’ sound has been compared to Colbie Caillat, Norah Jones and Alison Krauss, and her most recent album, Daydream, reached No. 6 on Billboard’s New Artist Chart and No. 1 on iTunes’ Singer/Songwriter chart. Lynch, who performed in the studio for Uproar and on the stage with Baylor Theatre, released a short EP in 2013 and followed up with her first single, “The Cave,” last year. Another Baylor singer-songwriter, Patrick Dodd, BA ’08, offers a laid-back singer-songwriter vibe on his debut EP, “Abroad.”

Fans of the David Crowder Band may recognize the name Logan Walter, BA ’07, who got started as the back-up worship leader to Crowder at Waco’s University Baptist Church in 2003. He and his band, Dutton, spent 10 years leading worship at churches in Waco, Dallas and Austin before going their separate ways in 2012. Walter and some new bandmates formed the Logan Walter Band in 2013; the group now leads worship at Austin Stone Community Church.

We’ve covered Christian hip hop artist Tedashii on this blog before, but you haven’t read the story of how a random encounter on campus led to his coming to Christ, you should. With four albums under his belt, Tedashii also creates music for the Village Church in Denton, Texas; last summer, he even collaborated with fellow Baylor alum David Crowder on one project.

But Baylor alumni aren’t all singer/songwriters or Christian artists… Electro/pop duo The Last Royals features Brooklynites Mason Ingram, BM ’07, and Eric James; together, the pair writes songs born “from the soaring highs and bottomed-out lows of daily urban existence.” Halfway across the country, Stephanie (Young) Brehm, BA ’96, and her husband David have put their sultry jazz sound down on two albums as The Brehms. And here in Central Texas, the Friendly Savages (which includes Michael Summers, BFA ’08) mix rock, blues and classical music into a unique sound.

    Sic ’em, Baylor recording artists!
