• Incoming freshman named Miss Teen USA 2011

Miss Teen USA Danielle DotyOne month from today, Baylor’s Class of 2015 will begin Welcome Week activities. Among the hundreds of freshmen learning their way around campus could be the newly crowned Miss Teen USA 2011, Danielle Doty.

Doty received the crown Saturday night in ceremonies held in the Bahamas (see video of the crowning here). Part of the larger Miss Universe competition, Doty earned the right to compete at the national level after being named Miss Teen Texas in November.

A native of Harlingen, Texas, Doty would not be the first member of her family to head to Baylor. Her mother, Elizabeth, BSED ’83, and her uncle, Dr. Michael Pietro, BS ’81, are both BU graduates as well. Danielle has already earned a spot on the Baylor All-Girl Cheer Squad this fall, but may have to postpone those responsibilities; Miss Teen USA often spends the year traveling to promote causes supported by the Miss Universe organization, such as Best Buddies and Sparrow Clubs.

Such work would be nothing new to Doty, an active volunteer in her South Texas hometown in organizations from Student Council to the Humane Society. Easily among the top 10 percent in her graduating class, Doty’s plans have been to major in communications at Baylor before beginning a career in broadcasting.

    Sic ’em, Danielle!
