…ory in Waco, it’s easy to forget that the University actually started out over 100 miles south in Independence, Texas. In recent years, Baylor has become more involved in actively remembering and helping restore the University’s original site; incoming freshmen who go through Line Camp now visit Independence, and a new walking trail that passes through the original campus was dedicated a couple of years ago. With that in mind, it makes sense that…
…es Kyle Reynolds (Cubs), Kevin Russo (Yankees), Drew Sutton (Astros), Cory VanAllen (Nationals), Sean Walker (Astros) and Abe Woody (Diamondbacks). Four more Baylor alums are active in A-ball: Zach Dillon (Orioles), Seth Fortenberry (Yankees), Jeff Mandel (Nationals) and Tim Matthews (Rockies). Last but not least, four Bears drafted just last month are playing at lower levels: Nick Cassavechia (Tigers), Randall Linebaugh (Reds), Mace Thurman (Reds…
…ide of their comfort zone for one month to see how others live. Crockett, a 14-year NFL veteran, won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos, and he was there when Denver Lions teammate Mike Utley was paralyzed during a game in 1991. Crockett was clearly moved from the experience, both from what he went through and from others he met who didn’t have any choice about their fate. This 30-second commercial previews the episode, and FX has clips from…
…isiana. He also started the Tadpole Foundation, an organization aimed at giving every child a chance to go fishing. (The Waco Tribune-Herald ran a nice feature on Pack in May.) Interestingly, after Jones won the Bassmaster Classic this year, he was invited by President George W. Bush to the White House, where the President noted that he had previously been introduced to Jones by none other than Charlie Pack. Small world! Sic ’em, Baylor fishermen!…
…. The other Baylor players selected were all pitchers: Mace Thurman (Cincinnati Reds, 17th round), Tim Matthews (Colorado Rockies, 27th round), Randall Linebaugh (Reds, 37th round) and Nick Cassavechia (Detroit Tigers, 37th round). Weems and Thurman could return to Baylor for another year if they do not sign pro contracts; the other three Bears each completed their eligibility this spring. In head coach Steve Smith’s 14 seasons at Baylor, he has s…
Senior Zuzana Zemenova very nearly wrapped up her four years at Baylor in a storybook fashion, advancing all the way to the finals of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championships before being defeated in her final match. Zemenova burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2005 by winning the national title in singles, and she leaves Baylor as the most acclaimed player in program history. Four years, four Big 12 Player of the Year awards (the first st…

…ness for suicide prevention. The guys are still at it, and have now gained national attention for their work. Earlier this month, the quintet hosted the “Dean’s List” music video countdown on mtvU; inbetween videos of songs related to their mission, the group talked about what they’re doing and how people can help. The show was filmed on campus; watch it online here. The Alive Campaign has also moved beyond Facebook and MySpace to their own websit…
Baylor music students represented the University extremely well in national competition last week. (Is it too bad a pun to note that such success is music to our ears?) Juniors Sarah Harris, Ross Ahlhorn and sophomore Adam Gautille competed in the semi-finals of the National Trumpet Competition earlier this month. From an initial field of 105, the trio made the cut to the final 45. Gautille went even further, advancing to the finals, where he pla…
