  • Women’s tennis ranked No. 1 in the nation

March 17, 2010 // Posted In Athletics, Honors

Lenka BroosovaWhile the Baylor basketball teams are getting most of the attention this week as they roll into the NCAA tournament, they are just two of the seven Baylor winter/spring sports currently ranked among the top 25 in the nation. Which program leads them all? That would be head coach Joey Scrivano’s women’s tennis team, ranked No. 1 in the nation this week as they move into Big 12 Conference play.

This is the first time the Lady Bears have ever been ranked No. 1, but it doesn’t come as a complete surprise. The women began the year at No. 5 in the nation, the program’s fourth top-10 preseason ranking in five years, and are coming off a stretch in which they beat No. 13 Southern Cal and No. 2 UCLA on the road, then defeated No. 4 North Carolina in Waco — all in the span of five days.

Four Lady Bears are ranked among the top 100 singles players in the nation, led by senior Lenka Broosova, who is No. 5 in this week’s rankings. Baylor also has one ranked doubles team, Broosova and senior Csilla Borsanyi, who rank eighth.

Which other Baylor teams are ranked among the top 25 in the nation. After women’s tennis, there’s equestrian at No. 7, men’s tennis at No. 8, women’s basketball at No. 14, men’s basketball at No. 19, men’s track and field at No. 22, and softball at No. 24.

Sic ’em, women’s tennis and Baylor athletics!
