Happy 175th birthday, Baylor University!
Baylor University was chartered by the Republic of Texas on Feb. 1, 1845 — making us the oldest continually operating university in Texas.
That means Saturday is the university’s 175th birthday! Banners (and a new billboard on I-35) have already gone up all around campus, and the Baylor community will be celebrating #Baylor175 all month long (really, all semester long). Featured events include:
- a celebration at Saturday’s men’s basketball game vs. TCU (with free popcorn, birthday hats and other surprises);
- a birthday-themed Dr Pepper Hour on Feb. 18 (think birthday cake, giveaways, balloon artists, photo ops and more);
- a special event for alumni and friends on Feb. 21, hosted by Robert Griffin III; and
- an international day of service in April (basically, Steppin’ Out transported to wherever Baylor alumni live).
Other events and happenings include a birthday party for our live bears, Joy and Lady, on Saturday, and a special exhibit at the Mayborn Museum on Baylor’s history that debuts Feb. 1. Baylor’s social media accounts will also be sharing a wide range of content celebrating the university’s long history.
Sic ’em, Bears!
