• ‘Global Baylor’ effort emphasizes importance of international opportunities and service

    Global Baylor

Baylor’s mission has long been to prepare students for “worldwide leadership and service,” but the university is kicking that up a notch with a new emphasis known as “Global Baylor.”

The comprehensive effort aims to shine a spotlight on challenges faced not just here in Texas or even America, but around the world. In new campus events and by special guest speakers, students will be challenged to think globally — and to really consider an enhanced array of study abroad and global missions opportunities, which will be supported by increased scholarships. A new Certificate in Global Engagement will be offered to students who work through a program of special electives and opportunities, from study abroad and missions to Mission Waco’s poverty simulation. Overall, the goal is to graduate students who are globally aware and globally engaged.

Why is this important? Baylor students explain the benefits they’ve experienced from “going global” in this video:

The plan will initially focus on global health issues, says Dr. Jeffrey Hamilton, the university’s vice provost for global engagement. “As a Christian research university, Baylor is called upon to tend to a broken world,” Hamilton explained in a recent episode of the Baylor Connections podcast. “Opportunities for global health experiences — through research, study abroad or global missions — enable Baylor students to develop cross-cultural, transdisciplinary, and discipline-specific skills while actively engaged in Kingdom work.”
