Baylor name stands strong in the world of healthcare
If you’ve spent much time in Texas, you know that Baylor University isn’t the only prominent organization using the Baylor name. Most notably, Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) is the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas, treating 5 million patients a year, while the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is annually among the nation’s very best medical schools.
Both BSWH and BCM share their names with Baylor University because they came from Baylor University. Though functionally independent today, the three institutions are inextricably linked to one another through their shared history and vision. Combined, Baylor University, Baylor Health Care System and the Baylor College of Medicine have made the Baylor name a leader in the world of healthcare.
About 1 in 3 Baylor undergraduate students enrolls planning to major in a health-related field, drawn by the university’s long-held reputation for preparing students to thrive in healthcare careers. That’s one reason why, in 2014, Baylor Regents voted to establish the Robbins College of Health & Human Sciences as the university’s 12th school or college, joining the long-lauded Louise Herrington School of Nursing.
Of course, Baylor isn’t only preparing tomorrow’s healthcare industry leaders — they’ve also prepared many of today’s, including both the CEO and president of Baylor Scott & White, a former Baylor Health CEO, the president of a system of rehabilitation and nursing centers, and a retired U.S. Army major general who served as Commanding General of the Army Medical Department and School, just for starters.
Other big names from Baylor’s past include Dr. Michael DeBakey, a renowned Baylor cardiac surgeon who pioneered development of the artificial heart, and First Lieutenant Mary Louise Roberts, a Baylor nurse who became the first woman in U.S. history to earn the Silver Star for heroic actions.
