Baylor music groups making waves nationwide
Academics. Athleticism. Giving nature. Baylor students seem to have it all. This past March, it was their musical talents that took center stage, emanating from the Baylor campus and across the nation.
Baylor trumpet students made history at the national level, becoming the first group to win the National Trumpet Competition (NTC) three times. An ensemble group of Bears took first place at this year’s NTC in March; making that feat even more impressive, the Baylor septet was likely also the youngest ensemble in the final round. In the words of The Baylor Lariat, “The cast of Pitch Perfect has nothing on Baylor’s VirtuOSO.” Though the group has only been around for three years, they won the International Championship of Collegiate A Capella (ICCA) Semifinal last month. This weekend, the members of VirtuOSO (pictured above) will sing their hearts out for the ICCA Finals at The Beacon Theatre in New York City. [Hear them sing here.]
Last but not least, the Baylor School of Music’s A Capella Choir spent 10 days this spring touring the western United States, ending up in Salt Lake City to perform at the 2015 National Conference of the American Choral Director’s Association — one of just four colleges chosen to perform there. “You could say being invited to perform is like being in the Final Four of college basketball,” said conductor Alan Raines. Sic ’em, Baylor music students!
