• Texas Supreme Court Justice, Baylor alum — and social media savant

    Justice Don Willett

“Only one justice is bold enough to snap a selfie while being interviewed on national TV about tweeting…” That justice is Texas Supreme Court Justice (and Baylor alumnus) Don Willett.

Willett (pictured above with Robert Griffin III) graduated from Baylor in 1988 having triple-majored in finance, economics and public administration. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Texas in 2005 (to fill a vacancy created when another Baylor graduate, Priscilla Owen, BA ’76, JD ’77, moved to the U.S. Court of Appeals, 5th Circuit), and has twice been re-elected to the position.

Willett’s social media prowess has recently brought him some national attention, thanks to coverage such as this feature in The New York Times and this interview on “FOX & Friends.” Each highlighted the ways Willett has used social media to explain his stances on issues, to connect with voters through memes and cultural references, and to show his love for Baylor. While most judges shy away from Twitter and Facebook, Willett calls it “judicial malpractice” not to use social media as a tool for public outreach.
