One-third of Texas ‘Protect Our Kids’ Commission appointees come from Baylor

Sadly, Texas leads the nation in the number of children who die each year from abuse or neglect. While that number has dropped in recent years, there is clearly more progress to be made. Toward that end, in June, the Texas Legislature created a special workgroup composed of six experts in the field who will study and suggest strategies to address and reduce such needless deaths.

Two of the group’s six members (all appointed by Governor Rick Perry) are Baylor Bears. Longview, Texas, resident Robin Sage, BA ’80, JD ’81, will lead the Protect Our Kids Commission as presiding officer; she will be joined in the group by Leticia Martinez, BM ’90, JD ’94, of Fort Worth.

Sage retired in 2010 after 20 years as a family court judge. She currently serves as a judicial consultant for the National Center for State Courts and Casey Family Programs and as jurist-in-residence for the Supreme Court of Texas Permanent Judicial Commission for Children, Youth and Families.

Martinez is an assistant district attorney and chief prosecutor for the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Crimes Against Children Unit. She has spent two decades in the DA’s office, serving in a variety of prosecutorial and supervisory roles.
