Pair of baseball Bears named Freshman All-Americans
For the fourth time in school history, a pair of Baylor baseball players was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team, released by Collegiate Baseball June 9. Left fielder Logan Vick and first baseman Max Muncy each were honored by the publication.
Vick (pictured), a native of Kerrville, Texas, hit .329 with 10 home runs, 11 stolen bases and 59 runs scored for head coach Steve Smith’s Bears. He set a new school record for walks in a season with 59 and also led the team in runs, doubles, total bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Muncy, from Keller, Texas, hit. 300 and set Baylor freshman records with 11 home runs and 53 RBI.
Vick and Muncy have to like their chances at going pro in a couple of years, given that each of Baylor’s previous 11 Freshman All-Americans has gone on to be selected in the MLB draft. That includes 2010 draftee Raynor Campbell, a 2007 Freshman All-American who was picked in the 14th round by the San Francisco Giants earlier this month. Campbell was one of six Bears selected in this year’s draft, along with Craig Fritsch (16th round, Philadelphia Phillies), Brooks Pinckard (18th round, Chicago Cubs), Gregg Glime (24th round, Florida Marlins), Willie Kempf (27th round, Atlanta Braves) and Shawn Tolleson (30th round, Los Angeles Dodgers). A total of 76 Bears have been selected in Smith’s 16 years leading the Baylor program.
Sic ’em, Baylor baseball!
