• Baylor senior reaches Hollywood on ‘American Idol’

Last spring, we cheered on Baylor student Holly Tucker on NBC’s The Voice, where she eventually made the competition’s final six. Now, yet another Baylor students is making a name for himself on a nationally televised singing competition.

Savion Wright, a senior medical humanities major from Jasper, Texas, was featured on last night’s season debut of Fox’s American Idol. After performing an original song at an audition in Austin, Wright received a “yes” vote from all three judges — Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. — to move on to the next round in Hollywood. [Watch his audition below.]

Wright is no stranger to many Wacoans and the Baylor family, who have heard him perform at Common Grounds, in Baylor Chapel, in recent Homecoming parades, and with Baylor’s student-run label, Uproar Records. In fact, in an interview last fall, Wright credited his experiences at Baylor with helping him develop as an artist.

The Waco Tribune-Herald described his sound as a mix of rock, pop and soul; Wright himself lists such artists as Sting, Eric Clapton and Coldplay’s Chris Martin among his influences. Auditions continue on American Idol for two more weeks, so Wright’s next appearance will likely be the first week of February. Stay tuned!

    Sic ’em, Savion!
