  • Alum starring on Broadway in ‘Once,” 2012 Tony Award winner for best musical

June 11, 2012 // Posted In Alumni, Honors, Videos

Elizabeth A. Davis in "Once"What a night for Baylor alum Elizabeth A. Davis… If you were among the millions watching the Tony Awards Sunday evening on CBS, then you saw Davis performing live with the cast of “Once” and heard her thanked by the show’s producers when “Once” was named the 2012 Tony Award winner for Best Musical. You also might have seen her on the red carpet before the awards show with her husband, fellow Baylor grad Jordan Richard, BA ’05.

Davis is one of the stars of “Once,” which led Broadway with 11 Tony nominations and brought home eight awards, adding “Best Actor in a Musical” and “Best Direction of a Musical” to the “Best Musical” honor. Davis was nominated for “Best Featured Actress in a Musical,” but was beat out by Judy Kaye of “Nice Work If You Can Get It.”

Based on an independent film, “Once” is described at Playbill.com as “the story of an emotionally charged romance. On the streets of Dublin, an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant are drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, an unexpected friendship and collaboration quickly evolves into a powerful but complicated love story.” Davis is third on the bill as Réza, a role she originated off-Broadway that requires her to act, sing, dance and play the violin — sometimes all at once. The show debuted on Broadway in March and is still running.

    Sic ’em, Elizabeth!
