Fun weekend of sports includes 4×400 relay’s 5th straight nat’l title

Forgive us while we go heavy on athletics for the next few days; with students just getting back from spring break, the buzz around campus is focused on Baylor basketball, and we’ll get to that in a minute. But first, I wanted to make sure some other impressive accomplishments don’t get lost among all the exciting basketball news from this weekend.

At the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, Baylor’s 4×400-meter relay team of Trey Harts, Marcus Boyd, LeJerald Betters and Quentin Iglehart-Summers won the NCAA title for the fifth straight time. The Bears won the event at the indoor and outdoor championships in 2007 and 2008 and have now tied the NCAA record for consecutive titles in the event. The only other school ever to achieve that feat? Baylor, of course, from 1990-92. Harts also won the 200 meters, becoming just the ninth Baylor athlete to win an individual national title.

In other athletics news from the week: the men’s golf team won its third tournament of the year, capturing the 2009 Border Olympics title by seven strokes; Baylor baseball’s Aaron Miller was named Big 12 Player of the Week; softball assistant coach Britni Sneed Newman was inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame; and Baylor men’s and women’s tennis each toppled top-25 foes.
