• 49ers name Baylor legend Singletary as new head coach

Mike SingletaryOver 150 former Baylor football players have played in the NFL over the years, but until this week, no Bear had ever been an NFL head coach.

That changed Tuesday, when Baylor great Mike Singletary was introduced as interim head coach of the San Francisco 49ers; he will lead the 2-5 team through at least the final nine games of this season. Singletary had spent the last three and a half years as an assistant coach in San Francisco after two seasons as an assistant with the Baltimore Ravens.

A member of both the Pro and College Football Halls of Fame, Singletary lettered at Baylor from 1977-80, twice earning unanimous all-America honors. During his 12 years with the Chicago Bears, he was selected for the Pro Bowl 10 times.

During his time at Baylor and in Chicago, Singletary was known for his intensity; just look at his eyes in the picture at right. 49ers owner John York pointed to that fire as the reason why Singletary — a position coach — was promoted over the team’s offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who led the St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowls as a head coach.

Sic ’em in San Francisco, Singletary!
