• Elementary teacher works Baylor into her students’ education

opp-univ-oct09In recent years, many educators have learned that preparing students for college doesn’t begin in high school; promoting post-secondary education increasingly begins in junior high and even elementary school.

As part of a program called “Opportunity University,” each classroom at Swinburn Elementary in Tulia, Texas, adopts a college or university. Debbie Barnes, a fourth-grade math teacher at Swinburn, chose Baylor because of the great experiences her two daughters (one a recent graduate, the other a junior) have had as Bears. As you can see in this photo gallery, she has decked out her classroom in green and gold, teaching these little ones early what being a Baylor Bear is all about. She’s been able to share Baylor materials with the high school counselor, and says she even works Baylor into math problems!

    Sic ’em, Ms. Barnes!
