{"id":831,"date":"2009-02-18T09:52:08","date_gmt":"2009-02-18T15:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/homepages.baylor.edu\/baylorproud\/2009\/02\/18\/faculty-center-chef-wins-food-network-style-competition\/"},"modified":"2009-02-18T09:52:08","modified_gmt":"2009-02-18T15:52:08","slug":"faculty-center-chef-wins-food-network-style-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/baylorproud\/2009\/02\/faculty-center-chef-wins-food-network-style-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Center chef wins Food Network-style competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/aramark-chef-feb09.jpg\" alt=\"Baylor Faculty Center executive chef Ben Hernandez\" align=\"right\" \/>When there doesn&#8217;t seem to be anything else on, the TV in our household often ends up on Food Network, particularly if one of their competition shows is on: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/iron-chef-america\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Iron Chef America<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/food-network-challenge\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Food Network Challenge<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/throwdown-with-bobby-flay\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Throwdown with Bobby Flay<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Baylor\/ARAMARK chef Ben Hernandez recently won a regional ARAMARK competition that sounds a lot like another show, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/dinner-impossible\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dinner: Impossible<\/a>. Hernandez and the other competitors had to create a three-course meal for less than $15 a plate and execute it from start to finish in four hours. The results were compared by a panel of five judges; Hernandez received a score of 96.6 out of 100, defeating chefs from four other universities (including three other recent gold-medal winners).<\/p>\n<p>Hernandez, who serves as executive chef for Baylor&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dining.baylor.edu\/en-US\/CSSW\/Baylor\/ResidentialDining\/McMullenConnallyFacultyCenter.htm\" target=\"_blank\">McMullen-Connally Faculty Center<\/a>, prepared a meal that began with quail &amp; sweet cornbread tart served with blackberry BBQ sauce. The main course consisted of pan-fried flounder with golden tomato cream sauce, poached baby carrots, leek slaw and Yukon gold mashers, and was finished off with a dessert of southern tiramisu &amp; caramel raspberries topped with spun sugar.
