Then last night, I was flipping channels and came across former <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comedycentral.com\/motherload\/index.jhtml?ml_video=102970\">Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan on <em>The Daily Show<\/em><\/a>, and he gave a pretty good explanation of how it all works.<\/p>\n<p>Why do I mention this? Well, as it turns out, there&#8217;s a Baylor connection at the Federal Reserve &#8212; Michelle A. Smith, who serves as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/bios\/officialstaff.htm\">Assistant to the Board and Director of the Office of Board Members<\/a>. Smith, who graduated with her BA in journalism in 1990 and masters degrees in science and international journalism a year later, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/press\/other\/20060210a.htm\">oversees the congressional, media and public information activities of the Board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Good to know that, even if I don&#8217;t get it, there are Baylor people out there working (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/08\/17\/business\/17stox.html?ex=1345003200&amp;en=e18a7e17ed4803a8&amp;ei=5088&amp;partner=rssnyt\">through the media<\/a>) to help us understand what&#8217;s going on!<\/p>\n<p>Sic \u2019em, Michelle!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve never quite understood what it is that the Federal Reserve does &#8212; perhaps because the only economics class I ever took was a blow-off course in high school.
