{"id":5450,"date":"2011-03-04T10:18:34","date_gmt":"2011-03-04T15:18:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baylorproud.wpengine.com\/?p=5450"},"modified":"2011-03-04T10:18:34","modified_gmt":"2011-03-04T15:18:34","slug":"baylor-nursing-stepping-up-to-fill-growing-need-for-nurse-midwives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/baylorproud\/2011\/03\/baylor-nursing-stepping-up-to-fill-growing-need-for-nurse-midwives\/","title":{"rendered":"Baylor nursing stepping up to fill growing need for nurse-midwives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"baby-feb11\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/baby-feb11.jpg\" alt=\"Baylor baby\" width=\"225\" height=\"241\" \/>The use of midwives in childbirth is on the rise nationwide as more and more women find that they prefer the more personal, natural approach nurse-midwives take compared to the average hospital. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylor.edu\/nursing\" target=\"_blank\">Baylor&#8217;s Louise Herrington School of Nursing<\/a> (LHSON) is among a handful of universities stepping up to fill that need.<\/p>\n<p>LHSON&#8217;s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylor.edu\/nursing_grad\/index.php?id=56683\" target=\"_blank\">nurse-midwifery program<\/a>, which began fall 2009, allows students to progress directly from a bachelor&#8217;s degree in nursing to a doctorate in nurse-midwifery. The first nurses in the country to finish the program received their degrees in May 2010 from Baylor, according to the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylor.edu\/pr\/news.php?action=story&amp;story=88473\" target=\"_blank\">approved the program&#8217;s initial acceditation earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Only eight nursing schools in the country offer the\u00a0Doctor of Nursing Practice in nurse-midwifery program, and Baylor is the only one in Texas. In its\u00a0accreditation letter, the Board of Review\u00a0praised Baylor&#8217;s program and its coordinator,\u00a0associate professor of nursing Dr. Mary Ann Faucher, &#8220;for an excellent program that will make important contributions to the underserved women and their families living in Texas, as well as those served by their mission work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sic \u2019em, Baylor nurse-midwifes!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The use of midwives in childbirth is on the rise nationwide as more and more women find that they prefer the more personal, natural approach nurse-midwives take compared to the average hospital.
