{"id":2858,"date":"2010-01-26T14:46:22","date_gmt":"2010-01-26T19:46:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baylorproud.wpengine.com\/?p=2858"},"modified":"2010-01-26T14:46:22","modified_gmt":"2010-01-26T19:46:22","slug":"law-student-among-states-top-10-scorers-on-cpa-exam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/baylorproud\/2010\/01\/law-student-among-states-top-10-scorers-on-cpa-exam\/","title":{"rendered":"Law student among state\u2019s top 10 scorers on CPA exam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/laing-jan10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"laing-jan10\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/laing-jan10.jpg\" alt=\"Nikki Laing\" width=\"225\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a>More than 900 new CPAs were sworn in last November by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy; during the ceremony, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylor.edu\/pr\/news.php?action=story&amp;story=66444\" target=\"_blank\">Baylor grad Nikki Laing, BBA &#8217;06, was recognized as one of the top 10 highest scorers in the state<\/a> on the CPA exam.<\/p>\n<p>Laing &#8212; now a <a href=\"http:\/\/law.baylor.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Baylor Law<\/a> student &#8212; hasn&#8217;t followed the most traditional of paths. Halfway through her undergraduate degree, she married and left school to start a business in Texarkana. Her experiences there led her to realize she wanted to go to law school. So, she returned to Baylor &#8212; living in Waco with her five-year-old son during the week, heading home to her husband in Texarkana on weekends &#8212; until graduating in 2006. A year later, she returned to Baylor for law school, even as her roots remain in Texarkana, where she works part-time for the law firm of <a href=\"http:\/\/nortonandwood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Norton &amp; Wood LLP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Never have I been associated with someone who is so committed to continuing improvement &#8212; improvement of self and improvement of business processes,&#8221; said Fred R. Norton, Jr., BBA &#8217;80, JD &#8217;83, partner at the firm and a Baylor alumnus himself. &#8220;She has been an inspiration to us.
