Griner, known for her 6-foot-8 height and ability to dunk, is now the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylorbears.com\/sports\/w-baskbl\/spec-rel\/100709aaa.html\" target=\"_blank\">Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year<\/a> as the 4th-ranked Lady Bears open their season Sunday at No. 9 Tennessee (4 p.m. CT, ESPN2).<\/p>\n<p>This year, both the Baylor men and women drew national headlines on Signing Day. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wacotrib.com\/sports\/content\/sports\/college\/2009\/11\/12\/11122009wacbumenrecruiting.html\" target=\"_blank\">Three years after he first verbally committed<\/a> to head coach Scott Drew&#8217;s Bears, Duncanville forward Perry Jones &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylorbears.com\/sports\/m-baskbl\/spec-rel\/111109aaa.html\" target=\"_blank\">a consensus top-5 recruit<\/a> &#8212; made his commitment official Wednesday. The highest ranked recruit in program history, the 6-10 Jones is <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/ncaa\/recruiting\/basketball\/mens\/news\/story?id=4644258\" target=\"_blank\">ranked No. 3 overall in the ESPNU Top 100<\/a>, No. 4 by Scout.com and No. 5 by Rivals.com. This marks the fourth straight year the Bears have signed a top-50 national recruit, following LaceDarius Dunn, Anthony Jones and Nolan Dennis.<\/p>\n<p>The women, meanwhile, followed up last year&#8217;s signing of Griner (part of <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/ncaa\/recruiting\/basketball\/womens\/news\/story?id=4352878\" target=\"_blank\">the top signing class in America<\/a>) with the commitment of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylorbears.com\/sports\/w-baskbl\/spec-rel\/111109aaa.html\" target=\"_blank\">the nation&#8217;s No. 2 player this year<\/a>, point guard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wacotrib.com\/sports\/content\/sports\/college\/2009\/11\/12\/11122009wacladybears.html?UrAuth=aN%60NUObNVUbTTUWUXU%60UZT%5BUUUWU%5CUVUZU%60UZUcTYWVVZV\" target=\"_blank\">Odyssey Sims<\/a>. The nation&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.espn.go.com\/ncw\/recruiting\/tracker\/prospects?&amp;state=null&amp;status=null&amp;toggle=null&amp;season=2010&amp;pos=PG&amp;action=upsell&amp;appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncw%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fprospects%3f%26state%3dnull%26status%3dnull%26toggle%3dnull%26season%3d2010%26pos%3dPG\" target=\"_blank\">top high school point guard<\/a>, Sims averaged 18 points, 7 assists and nearly 6 steals a game last year as a junior and was named district MVP for the third year in a row.<\/p>\n<p>Baylor basketball has seen tremendous success in recent years, with the women coming off <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/2009\/03\/hoops-update-men-reach-nit-final-four-women-in-ncaa-sweet-16\/\" target=\"_blank\">six straight NCAA tournament appearances<\/a> (including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylorbears.com\/trads\/natl-championships.html\" target=\"_blank\">2005 national championship<\/a>) and the men having made <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/2009\/04\/quartet-of-mens-hoops-seniors-end-careers-with-memorable-postseason-run\/\" target=\"_blank\">back-to-back postseason appearances<\/a> for the first time in 20 years.
