It may just be the biggest stage in sports sales for a student. Representing their schools at an NBA or NHL arena, students step up to the table with industry professionals (who may someday be their colleagues) and make their pitch. If it feels like an NCAA competition, that\u2019s intentional — and it\u2019s Baylor that makes it possible.<\/p>\n

Baylor\u2019s Center for Sales Strategy in Sports and Entertainment<\/a> (commonly known as “S3E”) is the driving force behind the National Collegiate Business Championships<\/a>. This series of sales competitions brings together college students from across North America to help them sharpen their skills and test themselves in front of industry leaders. Numerous in-person<\/a> and virtual<\/a> competitions comprise the championships in both the U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n

For Baylor, organizing such large-scale competitions provides an opportunity for the University to lead in a growing industry. Dr. Lane Wakefield<\/a> (MS’ 11), clinical associate professor and S3E director, started the sports sales competition before coming to Baylor, and brought the program here with him. Baylor has now led the program for six years, gathering outstanding students to compete in arenas across the country — like \u201cMarch Madness for Academics,\u201d as Wakefield describes it.<\/p>\n

The National Collegiate Sports Sales Championship<\/a> (NCSSC) was among the recent competitions held in recent weeks, taking place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta (home of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks). There, Baylor students made pitches to industry professionals under realistic conditions, amplified by the big-league stage. Competing against 250 students from 50 schools, Baylor finished No. 3 in the nation — and as Wakefield says, they won simply by delivering excellence in those conditions. And for Baylor, it\u2019s a win to elevate the entire industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cImpact on the industry we\u2019re involved in and a closer relationship with employers — those are important,\u201d Wakefield explains. \u201cAnd when our students compete, whether they win or advance or not, it\u2019s helping prepare them. There\u2019s pressure on them to get it done, and they come out of the experience improved and better from where they started.\u201d<\/p>\n

The numbers say Baylor\u2019s approach to student preparation is working, both on campus and in competitions like the one that just took place. S3E alumni work in just about every major sport<\/a> in both the college and professional ranks, and many find ways to give back to support the students at Baylor — future professionals who they may someday hire.<\/p>\n
