San Antonio and Baylor share a military connection that provides a natural fit for a groundbreaking brigadier general with decades of medical and military leadership.<\/p>\n
Dr. Deydre Teyhen<\/a> (DPT ’95) was recently promoted to the rank of brigadier general<\/a> in the U.S. Army and given command of San Antonio\u2019s Brooke Army Medical Center<\/a>. Notably, she is the first physical therapist ever promoted to brigadier general<\/a>.<\/p>\n For Teyhen, the historic appointment weaves numerous threads of her educational and professional life together. In addition to Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio is home to the longstanding Army-Baylor program<\/a>. For more than 70 years, Baylor has partnered with the military in education, research and training, and much of that has taken place at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, which houses the Army-Baylor program. It was there that Teyhen earned her doctorate from Baylor\u2019s highly ranked doctor of physical therapy program<\/a> in 1995.<\/p>\n After Baylor, Teyhan served her nation and her fellow military members in numerous roles both abroad and closer to home. Most recently, she served as deputy chief of staff at the Office of the Surgeon General. Before that, Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington called on her leadership as chief of outpatient physical therapy and commander of the Walter Reed Army Institute for Research during the COVID-19 pandemic. She\u2019s also taught at her alma mater as an associate professor and director of the Center for Physical Therapy Research in the Army-Baylor program.<\/p>\n Back in Texas once again, Teyhen is the commanding general of Brooke Army Medical Center, the manifestation in daily work of her role as brigadier general, and as the 20th chief of the U.S. Army Medical Specialist Corps.
