A new season begins this weekend for Baylor men’s and women’s tennis, with the perennial contenders building on past successes with high expectations in the new year.<\/p>\n
The men begin 2022 ranked No. 2 nationally<\/a>, coming off a national championship match appearance<\/a> and a Big 12 title<\/a> in 2021. The women are not far behind, ranked No. 11<\/a> in the preseason and looking to build on\u00a0a strong 2021 season<\/a> in which they finished with a 24-5 record.<\/p>\n Head coach Michael Woodson\u2019s Bears had high expectations last year and lived up to them, coming ever-so-close to the program\u2019s second national title. They did claim their 14th Big 12 regular season championship<\/a> and 10th Big 12 tournament title<\/a>, and were impressive in the NCAA tournament, knocking off Tennessee<\/a> in dramatic fashion in the national semifinals to reach the championship, where Florida claimed the title. With three returning all-Americans<\/a> (Adrian Boitan, Sven Lah and Matias Soto), plus two other battle-tested returnees and a host of newcomers, Baylor is the favorite to repeat as Big 12 champs<\/a>. The program also begins the year with Woodson having become the official head coach<\/a> after a stellar season as the interim coach.<\/p>\n On the women’s side, head coach Joey Scrivano’s Bears begin the year back among the nation’s top 15 and poised to build on last year\u2019s successes. The Bears return key players in Mel Krywoj, Alicia Herrero Linana and Paula Bara\u00f1ano, and have added Alabama transfer Isabella Harvison and a talented incoming group. Krywoj and Herrero Linana were impressive in fall action, finishing No. 4 nationally as a duo and advancing to the Fall Nationals.
