Black history is American history, so I want to make sure that we&#8217;re able to share it, and engage with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That effort doesn&#8217;t end just because the calendar has rolled from February (and Black History Month) on into March. In case you missed it, here&#8217;s a look back at how Baylor celebrated Black History Month this year, via this blog and on social media (reminder: the resources below are good twelve months a year):<\/p>\n<p>The month began with BU students sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4Eo8l2OcSjI\">what Black History Month means to them<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What does Black History Month mean to you?\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4Eo8l2OcSjI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here at BaylorProud, we worked with Baylor professors to compile and share lists of resources you can use to learn more about Black history &#8212; not just in February, but year-round.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, Baylor history professor Ronald A. Johnson shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/baylorproud\/2021\/02\/baylor-prof-offers-resources-for-learning-more-about-african-american-history\/\">this list of Black American history books, podcasts and more<\/a> for those looking to enrich what they already know about our country&#8217;s history.<\/li>\n<li>Then, Baylor English professors Coretta Pittman and Ryan Sharp provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/baylorproud\/2021\/02\/interested-in-diving-into-black-literature-check-out-this-list-from-baylor-english-profs\/\">this list of foundational Black American literary contributions<\/a>, from novels to poetry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also put together <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/baylorproud\/2021\/02\/the-divine-nine-a-history-of-baylors-national-pan-hellenic-council-organizations\/\">this brief history of Baylor&#8217;s National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations<\/a>, often referred to as the &#8220;Divine Nine&#8221; &#8212; an integral part of life at Baylor for many Black students.<\/p>\n<p>The Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir blessed us all with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=itis2D7So7A\">their medley arrangement of three Black Gospel songs<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir celebrates Black History Month at Baylor\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/itis2D7So7A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Former Baylor football and NFL standout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P069yjrmeCk\">Walter Abercrombie (BSED &#8217;86, MSED &#8217;92)\u00a0explained the impact of representation<\/a> as he remembered another Bear, John Westbrook &#8212; the first Black football player to play in the Southwest Conference:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"#BlackHistoryMonth: Walter Abercrombie on John Westbrook\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P069yjrmeCk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Baylor senior Dahron Mize of Tau Alpha Alphas (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.) explained the history behind (and demonstrated) the form of dance known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rzRN0NALJUE&amp;feature=youtu.be\">stepping<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is stepping?\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rzRN0NALJUE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And Baylor senior Peyton Ball wrapped up the month with a performance of poet Sonia Sanchez&#8217;s noted work on the importance of education and unheard voices, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z4r4mZbC6mg\">This Is Not a Small Voice<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;This Is Not a Small Voice&quot;\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z4r4mZbC6mg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sic \u2019em, Bears!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As one Baylor student put it, &#8220;Black history is not just for Black people.
