Professional video game players &#8212; or teams of them &#8212; organize and compete around specific games, attracting big sponsorships from some of the world\u2019s most well-known companies. The dream for many of these players is to compete in large-scale international esports tournaments, winning fame, prestige, and their shot at million-dollar prize pools. This year alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-videogames-outlook\/global-esports-revenues-to-top-1-billion-in-2019-report-idUSKCN1Q11XY\">esports revenues are projected to exceed $1.1 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That number implies more than just a gaming community; it\u2019s becoming a booming industry. Baylor students are taking notice &#8212; and becoming pioneers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22128\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-oso-esports-trib.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-oso-esports-trib.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-oso-esports-trib-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-oso-esports-trib-768x572.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-oso-esports-trib-1024x762.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/baylor.campuslabs.com\/engage\/organization\/oso-esports\">Oso Esports<\/a> is a relatively new Baylor student organization. It was established in 2017 to promote and develop the emergence of esports at Baylor. Last year, more than 150 students joined. The group often meets for practices and matches downtown at <a href=\"https:\/\/nexusesports.com\/\">Nexus Esports<\/a>, Waco\u2019s hub for the growing industry. Baylor students have also started a more specific <a href=\"https:\/\/baylor.campuslabs.com\/engage\/organization\/baylor-virtual-reality-club\">Baylor Virtual Reality Club<\/a>, and a more general <a href=\"https:\/\/baylor.campuslabs.com\/engage\/organization\/baylor-videogame-club\">Videogame Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22129\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-vr-esports-jake-rutowski.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-vr-esports-jake-rutowski.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-vr-esports-jake-rutowski-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Meet Baylor senior Jake Rutkowski (right), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2019\/07\/18\/sdcc-2019-the-future-of-big-time-college-sports-is-electronic-and-virtual-at-san-diego-comic-con\/\">who\u2019s pushing to make virtual reality esports \u201cthe NCAA of esports.\u201d<\/a> In 2018, Rutkowski (an engineering major) founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvreleague.com\/\">Collegiate VR Esports League (CVRE)<\/a>. Through it, around 100 students nationwide compete representing schools such as Texas A&amp;M, Stanford, Berkeley, and of course, Baylor. Unlike other competitive clubs and sports, they don\u2019t even have to leave their dorm for matches, and instead are able to meet on an electronic field in a virtual arena.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22127\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-esports-vr-video-game.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-esports-vr-video-game.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-esports-vr-video-game-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-esports-vr-video-game-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bp-baylor-esports-vr-video-game-1024x512.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Baylor\u2019s School of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) even offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecs.baylor.edu\/index.php?id=962956\">video game development specialization<\/a>. The concentration is designed to help students understand the development and application of interactive digital media technologies. For their capstone project, seniors partner with film and digital media, art, music and entrepreneurship majors to create their own video game, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baylor.edu\/mediacommunications\/news.php?action=story&amp;story=209302\">debuting it at an event before graduation<\/a>. He\u2019s the first to graduate from Baylor Law with aspirations to become a esports attorney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn college, I worked as a senior game master for Blizzard Entertainment, helping moderate a game called World of Warcraft,\u201d he says. \u201cThe experience serving that gaming community was formative, and when I started law school, I knew I wanted to stay involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jameel is currently serving as a conference committee member for the nation\u2019s first Esports Bar Association (EBA), a community of young lawyers from across the country who are passionate about serving the legal needs of the video gaming community.
