More than 300 schools play Division I women’s volleyball. Only one of them is undefeated — and, for the first time in its history, that team is now ranked No. 1 in the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yes, Baylor volleyball<\/a> ascended to No. 1 in the nation in this week’s AVCA coaches poll<\/a>, claiming 54 out of 64 first-place votes to easily take the top spot. Head coach Ryan McGuyre’s squad is 11-0, including wins over No. 10 Marquette, No. 11 Hawaii, No. 13 Wisconsin, No. 14 Creighton and No. 22 Missouri.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the hot start, volleyball has joined women’s basketball and acrobatics & tumbling to give Baylor three No. 1-ranked teams so far in 2019, and six top-ranked programs in the last three years (alongside men’s basketball, men’s golf and equestrian). The teams join a host of academic programs<\/a> that have also been highly ranked in recent years.<\/p>\n

Next up for Baylor volleyball: The Bears’ Big 12 home opener against Oklahoma on Wednesday (7 p.m., ESPN+).<\/p>\n
