Last year, Shaw teamed with Baylor\u00a0computer science professor Greg Hamerly to take\u00a0his work a step further; together, the pair\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/2015\/02\/professors-app-helps-parents-detect-eye-disease-in-babies\/\" target=\"_blank\">released an\u00a0app that can actually help detect retinoblastoma<\/a>\u00a0by scanning your phone&#8217;s photos for\u00a0&#8220;white eye,&#8221; an indicator of certain eye diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Shaw (pictured above with his family; that&#8217;s\u00a0Noah in his arms) has focused on sharing his app with parents, physicians and news outlets. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.people.com\/article\/dad-creates-app-detects-eye-cancer-children\" target=\"_blank\"><em>People<\/em>\u00a0magazine featured him<\/a> as one of their \u201cHeroes Among Us\u201d; earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.house.gov\/legislation\/hearings\/research-and-technology-subcommittee-hearing-smart-health-empowering-future\" target=\"_blank\">he testified at a congressional hearing<\/a> on health technology; and in Germany, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bild.de\/ratgeber\/gesundheit\/krebs\/retinoblastom-neue-app-kann-kinder-augenkrebs-erkennen-38668480.bild.html\" target=\"_blank\">the country\u2019s best-selling newspaper\u00a0picked up his story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Spurred by the story, 10,000 Germans\u00a0soon downloaded <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/white-eye-detector\/id904042354?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\">the &#8220;CRADLE&#8221; app<\/a>. Of those thousands, 12 children went to the hospital after the app detected the telltale &#8220;white eye,&#8221; and of those 12, <a href=\"http:\/\/baylorlariat.com\/2016\/02\/10\/professors-cancer-detecting-app-helps-save-lives-in-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\">two were diagnosed with retinoblastoma<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; in time for the cancer to be easily treated. Here in the U.S., two more\u00a0families used the app when they noticed something strange about their children\u2019s photos; a subsequent\u00a0doctor visit led to diagnoses\u00a0of\u00a0eye disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always say that if we save just one life of a child, then that\u2019s worth all the work for many years, even,\u201d says Monika Koenig, head of the board of trustees for the German Children\u2019s Eye Cancer Foundation, where they are in the process of incorporating the CRADLE\u00a0app into its pediatric practices.\u00a0\u201cI think the world had been waiting for someone whose child is affected by retinoblastoma, who wants to do something against this unknown disease, and who has the resources to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And next for Shaw?
