Thus it\u2019s fitting that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wacotrib.com\/entertainment\/accesswaco\/art\/baylor-exhibit-of-mcardle-art-shows-texas-history\/article_d03a9ac5-4e10-5b0d-a446-68640591b52e.html\" target=\"_blank\">paintings of many of the most important moments in Texas history would find their way to Baylor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through Sept. 21, Baylor\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylor.edu\/martinmuseum\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Museum of Art<\/a>\u00a0is host to\u00a0a large collection of paintings by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tshaonline.org\/handbook\/online\/articles\/fmc03\" target=\"_blank\">Henry McArdle<\/a>, a former Baylor professor and artist whose works are some of the most recognizable images of Texas history &#8212; many of which have found a home in the Texas State Capitol in Austin. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylor.edu\/mediacommunications\/news.php?action=story&amp;story=145374\" target=\"_blank\">Henry A. McArdle: Texas Painter, Patriot, and Baylor Professor<\/a>\u201d is the largest collection of McArdle&#8217;s works ever to be shown together. The exhibit includes two works regularly on display at the State Capitol, including a painting\u00a0of Stephen F. Austin that has never before left the Capitol&#8217;s grounds.<\/p>\n<p>McArdle&#8217;s ascension to a place among\u00a0the most recognizable painters of Texana began\u00a0at Baylor, where he served from\u00a01871-85. Baylor president William Carey Crane recommended his professor\u2019s work to the governor, who was seeking decor for the then brand-new Texas Capitol, and the rest is history.<\/p>\n<p>You may not know it, but there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ve already seen some of his paintings around Baylor. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylor.edu\/about\/index.php?id=89253\" target=\"_blank\">iconic portraits of our first five presidents<\/a>\u00a0(as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.baylor.edu\/2009\/01\/restored-portrait-of-judge-baylor-highlights-founders-day-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\">Judge R.E.B. Baylor<\/a>) were all painted by McArdle, who went on to paint well-known works like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsl.texas.gov\/mcardle\/paintings\/alamo.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dawn at the Alamo<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsl.texas.gov\/mcardle\/paintings\/lee.html\" target=\"_blank\">Lee at the Wilderness<\/a>.\u201d Take a look and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsl.texas.gov\/mcardle\/paintings.html\" target=\"_blank\">see if you recognize some of McArdle\u2019s most famous works<\/a>, then go check them out at Baylor\u2019s Martin Museum.<\/p>\n<p>Sic \u2019em, Martin Museum of Art and Henry McArdle!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Baylor\u2019s roots in Texas run deep.
