On this date in 1953, one of Baylor’s grandest traditions began when the first All University Sing<\/a> was held on the Baylor campus.<\/p>\n Organized by Marie Wiley Mathis (just a year into what would become three decades as director of Baylor’s Student Union), the first event was held on April 25, 1953. It featured eight clubs performing “popular songs, old time favorites, and Baylor songs,” according to a brief\u00a0Lariat<\/em>\u00a0front-page story<\/a> the next week. Each act presented three songs, at least one of which had to be about Baylor. A group known as “Peer Club” won first place, followed by the Athenians and the freshman class.<\/p>\n
