Teammate Brooklyn Pope was also drafted in the third round by the Chicago Sky; the pair were the eighth and ninth Lady Bears selected in WNBA draft history.<\/p>\n<p>The Mercury rolled out all the stops after selecting Griner Monday night, introducing &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnba.com\/mercury\/news\/mercurycom-welcomes-brittney-griner_splash.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Griner Pack<\/a>&#8221; of tickets, launching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnba.com\/mercury\/news\/grinerfans.html\" target=\"_blank\">a special section of their website<\/a> dedicated to the Baylor senior, unveiling a 77-foot banner in downtown Phoenix, and even &#8220;renaming&#8221; a street near their arena &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sunsprbiz\/status\/323968659884220416\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\">Griner Street<\/a>.&#8221; (You can also already <a href=\"http:\/\/store.nba.com\/product\/index.jsp?productId=20135106&amp;cp=10817391.3136877.3337153.20828786&amp;utm_campaign=WNBADRAFT041513&amp;utm_source=WNBA_TWITTER&amp;league=wnba&amp;utm_content=WNBA&amp;utm_medium=SOCIAL\" target=\"_blank\">order a &#8220;Griner 42&#8221; Mercury jersey<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>But while signing as the top overall pick may seem the obvious choice, Griner could face an interesting decision: Should she go to the WNBA, where she&#8217;s predicted for stardom, or take a chance on a potential once-in-a-generation opportunity?<\/p>\n<p>As you may have heard &#8212; even <em><a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/WNT\/video\/britney-griner-1st-women-drafted-nba-18884459\" target=\"_blank\">World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer<\/a><\/em> picked up on the story &#8212; Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has made headlines for suggesting that <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/dallas\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/9127664\/mark-cuban-give-brittney-griner-opportunity-dallas-mavericks\" target=\"_blank\">his team would consider taking Griner in this summer&#8217;s NBA draft<\/a>. She wouldn&#8217;t be the first woman to get a shot with an NBA team &#8212; in 1977, the Utah Jazz drafted <a href=\"http:\/\/nbahoopsonline.com\/Players\/LusiaHarris.html\" target=\"_blank\">Delta State&#8217;s Lusia Harris<\/a> before the NCAA even recognized women&#8217;s basketball &#8212; but it&#8217;s enough of a\u00a0rarity\u00a0that Cuban&#8217;s comments sparked all sorts of speculation.<\/p>\n<p>Women&#8217;s basketball pioneer Nancy Lieberman said\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/espnw\/more-sports\/9131784\/nancy-lieberman-says-there-no-downside-brittney-griner-trying-make-dallas-mavericks\" target=\"_blank\">Griner should go for it<\/a>;\u00a0UConn coach Geno Auriemma, on the other hand, called it &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nba.com\/2013\/news\/04\/03\/auriemma-on-cubans-comments.ap\/\" target=\"_blank\">absolutely ludicrous<\/a>&#8221; to think Griner could make it in the NBA.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxsportssouthwest.com\/nba\/dallas-mavericks\/story\/Nowitzki-Life-in-NBA-for-Griner-would-be?blockID=888505&amp;feedID=3742\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitski and coach Rick Carlisle each weighed in<\/a>; Nowitski said it would be &#8220;tough&#8221; for her to make it, but Carlisle called her &#8220;a hell of a player.&#8221; And\u00a0NBA.com columnist Fran Blinebury noted that <a href=\"http:\/\/hangtime.blogs.nba.com\/2013\/04\/04\/griner-wouldnt-be-longest-draft-reach\/\" target=\"_blank\">Griner wouldn&#8217;t be the most unusual draft pick in NBA history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/more\/news\/20130406\/griner-nba-draft-mark-cuban\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Griner has said she&#8217;s interested by the possibilities<\/a>; we&#8217;ll see what happens when the NBA draft rolls around in June.
