Meet Baylor’s expert on urban education, HBCUs and multicultural awareness in schools
Dr. Lakia M. Scott joined the Baylor School of Education as an assistant professor in 2014, teaching courses on elementary reading methods and diversity issues to students undergoing the student-teaching portion of their degree. She also serves as executive director for Baylor’s Freedom Schools program, which instills character and ignites social action in local children while improving their literacy.
Outside of her day job, Scott is a recognized scholar in the field of urban education. Her research has focused on providing access to education and opportunity for traditionally minoritized student populations. She’s co-edited a textbook about literacy gaps and has been published in numerous journals, including Urban Education Research & Policy Annuals, Journal for Multicultural Education, Social Education, and the International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences.
Currently, she’s conducting research on national reading and language intervention programs for urban students, with a specific focus on the Urban Dialect. Scott hopes to further understand how to improve students’ academic outcomes, increase multicultural awareness and perspectives in teacher education programs, and extend the discussion on the academic and cultural relevance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
With such experience, it’s safe to say Dr. Scott is quite the expert on diversity issues, multicultural awareness, urban education, and HBCUs. Outlets turn to her for her expertise on topics such as the racial disparity in public schools between teachers and students, ways to boost literacy and confidence in children, and why HBCUs are fighting to preserve their schools and a piece of American history.
Sic ’em, Dr. Scott!
