Another sneak peek at Baylor’s Class of 2023

About a month from now, Baylor’s Class of 2023 will arrive on campus for Welcome Week and the start of the fall semester. Each will arrive with big plans — for their time at Baylor, and beyond. Here’s a sampling of what some of the newest Bears hope to do with what they learn at Baylor:

Growing up in Hot Springs, Ark., Jordan Erickson did it all: class president, valedictorian, a National Merit semifinalist, and captain of the basketball team. At Baylor, he’ll pursue a similarly unique path as a University Scholar, studying both science (likely biology) and the humanities (likely Spanish) — knowing that a second language like Spanish would be helpful as a doctor.

With two parents in the Air Force, Faith Bullard grew up seeing the toll military service took on her parents — and how some external assistance was able to help. That’s why the San Antonio graduate is planning to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. She hopes to play a part in helping those suffering from behavioral problems and mental health disorders.

As the son of Baylor professors Carson (sociology) and Kimberly (economics) Mencken, it’s no surprise Carter Mencken chose to attend Baylor. The National Merit Finalist has already written a thesis paper (“Feeding the Future: 870 Million Reasons to Accept GMOs”), and plans to continue studying biology and genetics at Baylor in preparation for a career in medical or scientific research.

Though she says she always loved science, Port Isabel (Texas) valedictorian Miya Whittington discovered her passion for anatomy during a summer camp program at Johns Hopkins. At Baylor, she will continue her studies by majoring in neuroscience and minoring in biochemistry with an eye towards med school.
