Baylor orchestra wins national competition for 4th straight year

For the fourth year in a row, the Baylor Symphony Orchestra has won the American Prize in Orchestral Performance as the nation’s top collegiate orchestra!

The American Prize is a national nonprofit competition in the performing arts. Baylor’s orchestra is the first ensemble in any of the competition’s categories to ever win first place four consecutive times. The group received a cash award, written professional adjudication and international recognition for their submitted performance. (Listen to the Baylor Symphony in action below.)

“To have a university orchestra that can perform the music of Bach, Vivaldi and Handel from one major historical era; Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms from another era; and Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Copland and Bernstein from more recent times sets this orchestra apart,” says Dr. Gary Mortenson, dean of Baylor’s School of Music. “The fact that the adjudication panel from the American Prize has recognized the Baylor Symphony as representing the highest levels of attainment for four years in a row is testament to the consistency of direction and instruction the orchestra receives here at Baylor University.”

Baylor Symphony Orchestra is Baylor’s flagship orchestra, dedicated to the quality performance of the orchestral repertoire and to the professional and artistic growth of its members. In a typical semester, 90-100 Baylor students, hailing from more than two dozen states and several foreign countries, perform in the ensemble.
