• A decade after her passing, this Baylor student’s legacy lives on in current Bears

    Kate Bronstein

Kate Bronstein loved art, and her life has led to countless people experiencing art, both in their homes and around the world. She also found joy in helping others, so it’s only fitting that her life has created opportunities for students who followed her to Baylor to receive a helping hand as they pursue their dreams.

To hear friends and family describe Kate, one gets the feeling her legacy would bring her joy. Ten years ago this month, Kate was killed in a car accident while a sophomore at Baylor; in her honor, family and friends banded to create a scholarship that helps Baylor art students study abroad.

In its first decade, the Kate Alison Bronstein Memorial Scholarship Fund has provided 14 Baylor students with study abroad awards — helping inspire those students by immersion in other cultures as they’ve pursued their artistic dreams. The scholarship has grown thanks in part to a creative (and appropriate) method of raising funds: art auctions.

The featured art has come from a variety of sources, including original works donated by some of Kate’s Baylor professors. In addition to raising funds to aid Baylor students, the auctions have also led to many of Kate’s loved ones owning art of their own — something she certainly would have appreciated. And bringing things full-circle, Kate’s parents, Dave Bronstein and Pat Gallien, have purchased dozens of works from the very students Kate’s scholarship has funded — providing them tangible pieces of her legacy to enjoy.

Memorial funds like Kate’s are among the many worthwhile scholarship funds at Baylor. On this 10-year anniversary of her loss, her family continues to dedicate time and energy to ensure that future Baylor students benefit from her time on campus. Interested donors can click here to make a gift in any amount, both honoring Kate and serving current and future Baylor students.

    Sic ’em, Bears!
